Below are some helpful links we have compiled that might be useful to anyone considering a stay in an assisted living facility. Also included are our favorite sources for caregiver education and support, as well as other generally helpful pages. We always welcome messages providing us with other links to add to the list!

Veteran's Affairs Info
Veteran's Benefits Administration - a good first stop for determining eligibility for veterans or surviving spouses.
Social Security Info
Aid and Attendance and Housebound Benefits Information - provides additional VA compensation above and beyond base pension for eligible persons who are functionally housebound and/or require the aid of another person to complete daily tasks (many veterans in assisted living care qualify for A&A or Housebound benefits.)
Social Security Disability - Information from the Alzheimer's Association regarding the Compassionate Allowances Initiative, which allows for the expediting of SSI/SSDI claims for individuals with debilitating conditions such as Early Onset Dementia, Lewy Body Dementia, and other conditions.
Elder Law and Planning
Under current law, VA recognizes the following wartime periods to determine eligibility for VA Pension benefits:

Mexican Border Period (May 9, 1916 – April 5, 1917 for Veterans who served in Mexico, on its borders, or adjacent waters)

World War I (April 6, 1917 – November 11, 1918)

World War II (December 7, 1941 – December 31, 1946)

Korean conflict (June 27, 1950 – January 31, 1955)

Vietnam era (February 28, 1961 – May 7, 1975 for Veterans who served in the Republic of Vietnam during that period; otherwise August 5, 1964 – May 7, 1975)

Gulf War (August 2, 1990 – through a future date to be set by law or Presidential Proclamation)
Elder Law of Michigan, Inc. - a nonprofit organization that provides legal, pension and benefits counseling free of charge for Michigan seniors and the disabled.
Legal Services of Eastern Michigan - provides free legal representation or consultation for Michigan seniors sixty and older, regardless of income. This program and / or service is funded in whole or in part by Genesee County Senior Millage funds.
Handbook for the Conservators of Adults (PDF) - information compiled by the Michigan Law Center that details why a conservatorship may be needed, how to obtain such an order, and how to abide by court ruling(s) re: reporting and other matters.
Advanced Directives (.doc) - information compiled by the Michigan Long-Term Care Ombudsman that details various types of Advanced Directives such as Durable Power of Attorney, DNR, Living Will, etc. and offers template forms.
